What is a Flan?
Flan, a delightful dessert known for its creamy custard and caramel topping, has a rich history with roots tracing back to ancient Rome. The word “flan” itself is derived from the Latin term “flado,” meaning flat cake. The Romans were known for their culinary skills, and they often made savory and sweet dishes using eggs as a primary ingredient. One of these dishes was a sweet custard-like preparation that laid the groundwork for what we now recognize as flan.
As the Roman Empire expanded, so did their culinary influences across Europe. The concept of custard-based desserts like flan spread throughout the continent, evolving and adapting to local tastes and ingredients. By the time of the Middle Ages, variations of custard desserts were popular across Europe, with each region adding its own twist.

Quick And Easy 3 Minutes Microwave Flan Dessert
Quick Preparation: Microwave flan can be prepared in a fraction of the time compared to traditional oven-baked flan. While traditional flan may take over an hour to bake in a water bath, microwave flan typically cooks in just 10-15 minutes, making it an excellent option for those seeking a quick dessert fix.
Simple Ingredients: Microwave flan requires basic ingredients such as eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, sugar, and vanilla extract. These ingredients are often readily available in most kitchens, making microwave flan a convenient dessert choice when unexpected guests arrive or when you want to satisfy a sweet craving.
Caramelization: The caramel sauce in microwave flan forms naturally during the cooking process. As the sugar melts and caramelizes in the microwave, it creates a deliciously sweet and slightly bitter sauce that coats the bottom and sides of the flan once inverted onto a serving dish.
Adaptability: Microwave flan can easily be customized by adding different flavors such as citrus zest, cinnamon, or even a splash of rum or liqueur to the custard mixture. These variations allow you to personalize the dessert to your taste preferences, creating a unique and delightful treat each time.
Convenience: Microwave flan is a practical dessert solution for occasions when you want a homemade dessert but are short on time or don’t want to heat up the kitchen with a long baking process. Its simplicity and ease of preparation make it a go-to recipe for those who appreciate homemade desserts without the fuss.
How to make flan in the microwave:
Ingredients List
Milk – I always use whole milk for this microwave flan recipe.
Egg – Egg should be at room temperature.
Sugar – Regular white granulated sugar.
Vanilla – Try to use quality Vanilla extract for better flavour.
Water – Just a little is required.
Instructions
Making microwave flan is a straightforward process that yields a deliciously creamy dessert with caramel sauce. Here are the steps to make microwave flan:
Prepare the Caramel:
In a microwave-safe mug, bowl or ceramic dish combine the granulated sugar and water. Stir gently to moisten the sugar. Microwave the sugar mixture for 1- 1 1/2 minutes, until the sugar caramelizes and turns golden brown. Keep a close eye on it to avoid burning. The caramel will be extremely hot, so handle with care.
Coat the Dish:
Swirl the caramelized sugar around the bottom and slightly up the sides of the dish to coat it evenly. Be cautious as the caramel will harden quickly.
Settle Caramel:
Take out from the microwave and put the bottom of the mug in cold water to help the caramel set.
Prepare the Flan Mixture:
Crack Egg in a mason jar and add Milk, Sugar and Vanilla extract to it and shake very well. You can do this step using a whisk as well. Make sure to mix them vey well.
Pour into the Dish:
Now using a sieve carefully pour the flan mixture over the caramel-coated dish. The caramel will mix slightly with the custard mixture, which is normal.
Microwave Cooking:
Put in the center of the microwave and cook for 2 & 1/2 to 3 minutes depending on your microwave. Check the flan periodically starting at around 8 minutes to avoid overcooking. The flan is ready when the edges are set, but the center is still slightly jiggly.
Cool and Chill:
Once cooked, remove the dish from the microwave and allow the flan to cool to room temperature. Finally transfer the cooled flan to the refrigerator and chill for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow it to set completely.
Serve:
To serve, run a knife around the edges of the dish to loosen the flan. Place a serving plate upside down on top of the dish, then carefully invert the dish to release the flan onto the plate. The caramel sauce will flow over the top of the flan, creating a beautiful glaze.
By following these steps, you’ll have a delicious microwave flan ready to enjoy in a fraction of the time it takes to make traditional oven-baked flan. Adjust the cooking time based on your microwave’s wattage to ensure the flan cooks evenly and perfectly.
